	Mark Stoeckinger, Supervising Sound Editor My name is Mark Stoeckinger.I am a supervising sound editor, What I love about my job is I really like to bring, ah, whatever the picture reality is to life through sound. And a lot of people have said that sound is 50% of the experience. I’d sure like to believe that. Ah, you can really alter an audience’s perception of the scene or focus of the scene with sound. Uh, the most important uses of sound, whatever supports the story the best because, again, it’s… it’s really… it’s all about story. And sound is one of the contributing aspects of that. All the crafts are contributing aspects of the story. And so, what sound can do to focus the viewer on whatever the dramatics are; it could be something that’s big and dynamic. It could be something that’s subtle. It could be almost silence. I can use the example of “The Italian Job.” That was a film where the cars in a way were a character in themselves. And they had to have unique sounds. But it wasn’t so much the sound of the cars, but it’s the way they played and the way they went. And they… I almost thought of them as a musical note. And so, 3 cars, 3 different notes and they always had a lot of movement to the sound. So, um, you could almost have sort of a metronome at times or you could have, you know, sort of the different notes, like a key change but, you know, not that they say that we’re in key. But it made scenes that were exciting fun at the same time or it made scenes that were fun a little bit edgy, and you could really manipulate the sound to help that. It’s also important for the home theater environment to reproduce that, to have certain standards and maybe encourage people to, you know, have the image and the sound compliment each other and not one overwhelm the other due to the way things are set up in the home.
