Matt Morgan
My name is Matt Morgan and I work at Naughty Dog as a water effects artist on Uncharted. what excited me the most about working in this field is all the advancements that we have with technology. It just continually increases the possibilities that we have. While we’re working on the graphics for the game we are continuously checking out—we actually check out things by the color as well. So we do color sampling on the monitor where we can actually look at the RGB values to see what the colors are. We’re usually not seeing that with our eyes the same way just because the televisions aren’t able to represent that to the degree that we need. So designing hi-def games is a lot more detail that you end up putting into everything. There’s more detail in the textures. There’s more detail in the polygons. There’s more detail in the overall look. As the GPs are getting a lot faster we’re able to render a lot more refined image with a lot higher quality than we ever were able to before across the board. So it’s not just in terms of resolution. It’s a lot of things that have increased, lighting, shadows, everything. And definitely your demands on what type of display and display technology is a lot higher than it ever has been. Because you want that better experience. Everything’s kind of on a different playing field. It’s like now you might have people who work in visual effects now coming over to the video game industry because we’ve now gotten closer to that level of quality. |
